In the last five years, the city of Jeddah is undergoing a series of infrastructure projects aiming in decongesting the city's heavy traffic flow. According to Jeddah Municipality spokesman Mohammed Al-Buqami, a total of 19 bridges and tunnels have been opened in the last three years, in addition to the maintenance works in 25 existing bridges and tunnels. Both domestic and international construction firms are involved in the works, with an estimated cost exceeding SR500 million.
Jeddah is about to become a city connected by bridges and tunnels, according to Jeddah Municipality spokesman, Mohammed Al-Buqami and this is not an understatement given the extent of infrastructure works currently under construction in the city. Nine major projects are at the moment under construction, while four new ones are under study.
Projects include the construction of tunnels, like the King Abdulaziz Intersection tunnel with Palestine and Al-Hamra streets, a 1,400meter long tunnel extending throughout King Abdulaziz Road and its intersection with Palestine and Al-Hamra Streets. Municipality authorities give a 36month timeframe to a SR314 million project aiming in improving traffic flow in the area. Additionally, one of the newest projects, the Ismael Abu Dawood bridge project, has been re-opened and includes the construction of a 740metrer long and 10meter wide suspended flyover bridge of 2 lanes, at a cost of SR32 million. On top of the above infrastructure projects, Jeddah's mayoralty has been performing significant asphalting, lighting and pavement works, roughly estimated at SR200m, as well as renovation projects in streets, public spaces, sidewalks and traffic intersections.
