Powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake rattles the Philippines

A powerful earthquake hit the Philippines today at 8:14 UTC, measuring a 6.7 (M_w) magnitude.

The earthquake was initially estimated to have a magnitude of up to 7.2 and was later reviewed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

Furthermore, the depth of the earthquake was initially believed to be 10 kilometers and was also later revised as 78 km by the USGS and 67 km by GFZ.

As for its epicenter, it was reported to be some kilometers offshore the southern Philippines’ coast, and the earthquake mostly Mindanao, the country’s second most populated island, home to about 26 million people.

Reports have been made of damaged walls and items falling from desks, but initial statements from the authorities suggest no casualties in the event.

Finally, no tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
