A landslide occurred in San Clemente, California, on Thursday, April 27, which caused rail service disruption along with four homes being evacuated and the Casa Romantica historic cultural center being closed.
Ground movement in this area was first reported on April 16, when cracks on the ground were observed.
The reported landslide resulted in the ground subsiding 20 feet, or about 6 meters, and debris getting close to the nearby rail tracks, which remain closed as of 1 p.m. on Thursday.
A $75,000 survey was ordered by the San Clemente City Council, in order for a slope stability evaluation to be carried out as well as the installation of ground monitoring equipment to be used within the following three weeks.
It is worth mentioning that the landslide was located approximately 2 miles north of a previous landslide-hit area, in which train service had once again been disrupted for nearly six months by the Orange County Transportation Authority and $13.7 million was spent on slope stabilization works.
