It was a great pleasure and honour for Mr. Roger Chandler, Managing Director of Keynetix, to deliver the “State of the Practice” address at the Annual Sowers Symposium in May this year at Georgia Tech. The symposium is now in its 19th year and commemorates the life of Mr. George F Sowers who served for 50 years as a faculty member at Georgia Institute of Technology as well as being a practicing Civil Engineer and Geologist.
Mr. Chandler’s talk, entitled “Transforming Geotechnical Data” discussed the way different countries value geotechnical data and introduced the local audience of around 175 people to case studies from UK, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Alongside Mr. Chandler, Professor Roman Hryciw from University of Michigan presented the “State of the Art” lecture on image analysis to determine grain size distribution plots and Mr. Rudy Bonaparte, president of Geosyntec, presented examples from his wealth of knowledge on Landfill design and Environmental Protection as the Sowers Lecture.
The event was very similar to a local Rankine lecture here in the UK, except the first two lectures were presented before dinner followed by the main Sowers Lecture. This gave all the delegates the opportunity to discuss the first two lectures over a fantastic dinner and drinks reception.
