Extensive ground improvement works on the Ohio River Bridges Project (Downtown Pursuit) along Interstates 65 and 64 in Downtown Louisville, are being executed since June 2013 by Hayward Baker. The project involves ground improvement for 42 retaining walls and embankment structures and is carried out for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Department of Transportation, which are joint owners of the transportation investment.
Soil conditions in the area include urban fills underlain by silty clays and silts, alluvial sands and gravelly sands with variable fines content. To support new embankments and mechanically stabilized walls, natural soil is improved using vibro replacement stone columns and rigid inclusions. Unlike most ground improvement applications, where design assumptions and performance is evaluated based on the as-constructed stiffness of the installed elements, the size of the footprints and magnitude of the applied stresses did not allow the adoption of the particular approach. Hence, according to Hayward Baker's project manager, Mike Minton, Hayward Baker decided to construct a 25-foot tall, 200-foot long instrumented surcharge fill over stone columns and rigid inclusions to monitor and evaluate the improved ground response at a representative location. Using an advanced instrumentation system, transmitting data to a Hayward Baker server, allowed engineers to access real-time data regarding soil stresses, pore water pressures and settlement accumulation at the location of the surcharge fill. In the next stage, Hayward Baker plans on installing appropriate instrumentation on more sites of the project for additional validation of the design assumptions anf construction procedures.
