Geotechnical Experts Warn of Ongoing Risks After Isle of Wight Rockfall

A massive landslide struck the Isle of Wight’s Belgrave Road on Friday, March 7, sending hundreds of tons of rock and debris crashing onto the busy coastal route. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but residents described the terrifying event as sounding like a bomb going off or an earthquake shaking their homes.

The collapse, which occurred at Ventnor’s fragile cliff face, highlights the region’s ongoing geological instability, with similar events recorded in 1928, 1978, 1994, and as recently as 2023. While warnings had been raised about the structural risks of the area, residents and officials now face a long road to recovery.

Following the collapse, Island Roads and the Isle of Wight Council have launched detailed geological assessments to determine if further movement is likely. The coastal route remains closed, with extended restrictions possible if instability persists.

Local Councillor Ed Blake had previously pushed for preventative measures, such as rock netting or controlled removal, to mitigate risks. Instead, temporary water-filled barriers were in place—proving ineffective against the recent landslide. Authorities will now reevaluate the area's safety, ensuring more effective preventive measures are implemented.

Engineers will continue monitoring the site before beginning the complex task of removing debris and stabilizing the cliff face. While officials are committed to reopening the road as soon as possible, public safety remains the top priority. With Ventnor’s history of frequent landslides, long-term geotechnical solutions will be crucial to preventing further disasters.
