Earthquake prediction and warning is an evolving technology, which is going to significantly contribute to civil and property protection. The possibility to have an actual early warning earthquake system is now closer to reality, thanks to a collaboration between USGS and a small start up company in the Golden State.
A small start up company in Santa Monica will be using high end cloud computing technology towards the direction of setting up an early warning earthquake system. The company, Early Warning Labs - EWL, has partnered with U.S. Government to built QuakeAlert, a special system that will warn California residents of upcoming earthquakes, about 30 seconds before occurring, allowing people to find shelter and save their lives.
According to EWL co-founder Josh Bashioum QuakeAlert will not require any hardware. It will connect to a cloud-based system to send warnings via an application to the user's smartphone. Another interesting feature of the new application, will be its connectivity to speaker systems, so that massive warnings are issued, for instance in concert venues, or even in hospitals, allowing enough time to switch to the emergency power system, protecting patients' lives.
