A new subway line is currently being built in Athens, Greece, and we paid a visit to one of its construction sites.
Furthermore, the new line is going to be the city’s fourth and facilitate 15 new stations.
The line will feature a length of 12.8 kilometers with an external diameter of 9.5 meters.
Its construction will be carried out by two Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBM), which were named Athena and Niki, while it is expected to last eight years.
The first TBM, Athena, started digging on June 9 and has so far progressed 260m, at a maximum pace of 13.5 meters per day. This TBM also required a short launch, as the entrance shaft’s length is 40m.
TBM Niki is currently being assembled, and will be launched from a larger shaft, using dummy rings.
Athena and Niki are two identical TBMs, which have a cutting diameter of 9.52 m and a shield length of 10 m.
The tunnel is going to be constructed in some different kinds of rock and will feature 1.5 m long and 0.35 m thick rings, and pressurized bentonite support.
We visited the longer “Veikou” entrance shaft, which includes a deep excavation that will accommodate several administrative spaces, which will stretch at a total internal length of over 200 meters.
During this site visit, we had the chance to take a look at the retaining structure of the vertical cut, which was composed of more than 200 widely spaced piles and an active strand tieback wall and features five rows of ground anchors that reach as long as 10 m in the ground.
Being located in Athens, the project will also require archeological excavation of roughly 45,000 m² and reach an estimated budget of €1.65 billion.
