In the early hours of January 21, 2025, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan near Chiayi County. The quake, with its epicenter located 38 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers, caused buildings to sway as far as Taipei. In Tainan, six people, including a one-month-old baby, were rescued from a collapsed house, while others were freed from elevators. The tremor caused minor injuries to 27 people and moderate damage, including a fire at a printing factory in Chiayi and visible cracks on the Zhuwei Bridge. Despite the destruction, no fatalities were reported, and authorities swiftly mobilized to assess the damage.
