This year the Geotechnics Day is dedicated to the theme “Head in the clouds, feet in the clay”. The theme reflects the unique nature of our field, where practice and theory must come together. Much of geotechnical theory is based on empirical knowledge. At the same time, good and safe geotechnical design is not possible without a theoretical foundation. 'Head in the clouds' also refers to a field that is rapidly developing in terms of data-driven work, automation and digitalization. The 'legs in the clay' emphasizes that these developments will always depend on the expertise of the geotechnical professionals involved.
