Hong Kong's Highways Department has announced that a 12 km long tunnel and viaduct link to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be completed by the end of this month.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is an ongoing construction project which consists of a series of bridges and tunnels crossing the Lingdingyang channel and connecting Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China.
The design and construction contracts of the tunnel and viaduct link – with a total value of HK$21.7bn (£2.2bn) - have been awarded to China State Construction Engineering and Dragages-China Harbour-VSL Joint Venture. Arup is the resident engineer for both sections.
The casting of all box segments in the Hong Kong Link Road's Scenic Hill Tunnel has now been completed, with the last part of the segment being jacked to its final position underneath the Airport Express Line. The link road will connect the main bridge on the mainland and the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities.
For the construction of the Scenic Hill Tunnel, different construction methods were adopted, in order to deal with the complex ground conditions and topographical constraints. They included the drill and blast method through the Scenic Hill, and the mined tunnel method underneath the Airport Road section.
Construction of the viaduct link near the area of Hong Kong's International Airport came along with airport-related height restrictions, which meant that viaduct construction in areas adjacent to the south runway had to be carried out at night when the runway was closed. Moreover, height detection equipment was installed to ensure construction was done within the height limits.
The Hong Kong section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be ready for launch by the end of 2017, according to Hong Kong's Highways Department.
