On Sunday, October 16th, a small suspension bridge collapsed killing 8 and injuring several more in Indonesia.
The bridge was designed for pedestrian and motorbike use. It connected the small island of Nusa Lembongan to the larger island of Nusa Ceningan.
Most of the victims were killed by falling debris from the bridge as the water below is not very deep. Witnesses reported that the bridge had been shaking heavily before the collapse. A large Hindu festival was being celebrated at a nearby temple on Sunday night. The bridge is about 30 years old and according to locals, it typically handles several pedestrians or motorbikes at a time. It is likely that the increased traffic from the festival led to its collapse.
