The death toll is expected to rise when the rescue teams reach inaccessible areas, according to the Pakistani authorities.

The epicenter of the magnitude-7.5 earthquake was in a mountainous region 158 miles north-east of the Afghan capital of Kabul at a depth of 133 miles.

The provincial director of the national disaster management authority, Abdullah Humayoon Dehqan said "there are reports of casualties and destruction" in some parts of Afghanistan.

"The devastation is going to be huge," said Fazl Din, a doctor in Peshawar. "It is very difficult to reach the far-flung villages. The governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan have no proper disaster management units."

The mountainous region is frequently hit by strong earthquakes.
