For a reason that scientists have yet to discover the most powerful and with the largest focal depth of earthquakes are affected by the seasons of the year, and usually occur between April and October. Researchers of Caltech and Scripps Institution of Oceanography studied all earthquakes that occurred on Earth after 1900.
In total, there were 60 earthquakes exceeding 7 magnitude and with depth of less than 500 km. The 42 earthquakes occurred during April-October. A similar seasonal pattern does not seem to exist regarding the smallest and most shallow earthquakes. There is no obvious explanation. Scientists said "From physical standpoint, seasonality is meaningless,"
A possible cause is the forces that our planer receives from the Sun's gravity or because of its rotation around its axis that can be varied depending on the time of year. But these forces are small in relation to the gravitational influence of the Moon on Earth.
On the other hand, at depths of 500-700 kilometers in the earth, the temperatures and pressures are so great that the rocks should be so soft that they would not even likely to suffer sudden ruptures and cause earthquakes.
According to the new analysis, this phenomenon is much more visible in some areas than in others. For example, in Japan almost all strong and deep earthquakes occur between April and October.
