London's Crossrail, the most significant infrastructure project currently in the U.K. aims to improve commuting services across London, alleviate congestion and completely modify traveling around the capital. 

Works in Europe's largest construction project started in May 2009, offering working positions to over 10,000 people at 40 construction sites. Upon its completion, Crossrail will connect Reading and Heathrow in the west, with Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, through entirely new tunnels dug under central London. The 100 km of rails will be interrupted by 40 stations, including 10 new at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Custom House, Woolwich and Abbey Wood. Crossrail, will connect major employment, leisure and business districts of London and it is going to change rail transport in U.K.'s capital, by increasing capacity by 10%, boost economic development and significantly reduce travel times for 200 million annual passengers, as it is estimated. Available funding for Crossrail is £14.8bn and the first trains are expected to make their appearance in late 2018. 

Tunnel length is estiamted to reach 26 miles, with the excavated material to be used to create a 1,500 acre nature reserve. Have a look of the new tunnels currently under construction in the photo gallery below, published by Crossrail Limited.
