Indonesia Earthquake: 7.7 Magnitude Quake Kills 53, Forces 5,000 Evacuations
News Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Indonesia, killing at least 53 people and forcing around 5,000 residents to evacuate, according to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency. The earthquake, which struck on Saturday, was followed by around 341 aftershocks, adding to fears among communities already affected by the devastation. Authorities in East Nusa Tenggara are considering declaring an emergency, which would allow officials to mobilise additional resources and funding for rescue and relief operations. The affected region has a history of major seismic activity. A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the area in 1992, causing extensive destruction. Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active zones. #indonesia #earthquake #i Show more
