The Hong Kong Observatory measured the quake at magnitude 6. Its epicentre was detected about 10km (6 miles) below Dapu township in Chiayi county, a mountainous region in the island’s southwest. Chipmaker TSMC said it evacuated staff at its factories in central and southern Taiwan. The earthquake was reported as being felt by people as it shook buildings as far north as the island’s capital Taipei. Local authorities said there were no major casualties and 15 people were sent to hospital with minor injuries.
