Professor Lymon C. Reese had a 33-year career at UT Austin, conducting pioneering work in performing field studies with instrumented piles and drilled shafts. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1975, he developed analytical methods now widely used in the design of deep foundations. Professor Reese was the ASCE Karl Terzaghi lecturer in 1976. Benson is the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) and a renowned geoenvironmental engineer with a distinguished record of research. Recognized worldwide for his expertise in waste containment systems, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His work is the interface of the built and natural environments and isperimental and analytical research in geoenvironmental engineering for over 30 years. His research has included laboratory studies, large-scale field experiments, and computer modeling, and has led to fundamental advances in design, construction, and performance assessment of barrier systems used for waste containment facilities. Findings from his research on lining systems have been incorporated into federal and state codes as well as guidance documents issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state regulatory authorities.
