A 100ft deep, slow moving landslide in Wyoming is gradually tearing apart a house on a hilltop, as authorities are issuing evacuation orders for 46 residencies located in the sliding zone. The slow moving landslide starting on March 4th, has 5% chance of becoming as violent as the Oso landslide that hit Washington state.
First signs of the slide included the displacement of a town water pump house and the 16-inch water pipe, flooding the adjacent two-lane highway. But the slow evolution of the particular slide in the skiing town of Jackson Wyoming, has given residents and authorities enough time to respond and evacuate homes within the sliding zone. However, some residents have ignored the evacuation orders and remain in their homes.
As local officials are able to observe cracks in the ground developing by inches every day, the geologist hired to evaluate the situation, estimates that the hilltop house, separating in two, is unlikely to become safe again for its owners, since its one side is on the slide area and the other the crest of the slide. The adjacent driveway is also damaged by a 6- to 12- upward crack in the pavement.
