California gets hit by deadly mudslides

Heavy rainfall caused rivers of mud and debris to run down from hillsides in Santa Barbara County, California, last Tuesday, killing several people and causing extensive damage to infrastructure.

The mudslides were caused by severe rainfall in Putumayo province, south-west Colombia, on Friday, March 31.

Fatal landslides are triggered by monsoon rains in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, causing many casualties, leaving hundreds of missing and washing away homes and destroying a tea-growing region of the country.

Consequences of the recent Colby fire in Southern California now become apparent, as storms along the entire length of California trigger dangerous mudslides and threaten many foothill communities.
