Measurand's ShapeAccelArray instrumentation system is used in the case of the structural monitoring of the Mactaquac Dam Generating Station, located in Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick, Canada. Alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) has led to concrete expansion and the observation of substantial deformation at the Dam.
Among the different technologies used in the monitoring of the Dam's deformation, SAAs have proven to be a cost effective solution for structures like the Mactaquac Dam. That it proven by the comparison of the SAA recordings against data obtained from inverted pendulums, which lay within the stated accuracy of the latter (0.3mm). The two instrumentation methods will continue to be compared and provided the good match is preserved, SAA could evolve in a reliable tool for the automation of long term deformation readings, and eliminate the need for precision drilling to install inverted pendulum installations.
