Japanese government researchers support that about 43% of the petrochemical complexes on Japan's Pacific coast are likely to be damaged in the event of a feared magnitude-9 earthquake in central and western Japan, as a result of earthquake-induced liquefaction. Reportedly, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is going to support the complexes' owners and speed up the implementation of disaster prevention measures.
The research outcome was presented at a meeting of oil and natural gas experts and collected data concerned petrochemical facilities in 6,154 locations, operated by 25 companies, whose names were not revealed by the Japanese government. Based on this data, 1,441 of the 3,327 complexes in the central and west Tokai region are at risk of being damaged in the onset of liquefaction in the event of a magnitude-9 in Nankai Trough fault. In the event of a Tokyo Bay magnitude-7 temblor, scientific data indicate that 707 out of 2,827 of the examined facilities are at risk.
The meeting participants also discussed the plan of a joint oil supply between Japanese and Middle East producers of oil and natural gas, making the government considering to expand its network. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is planning to release a report on oil supply under disaster conditions within this summer.
