Structural damages and noise are the reasons why residents at the Canterbury Shores Condos on Madison Park waterfront are upset. Pile-driving work during construction of the new 520 Bridge near the condos seems to be the main culprit. The residents are more concerned about the cracks they have detected in walls and ceilings than the extremely loud noise.
According to Don Morgan, the Building Manager, eight units are facing problems with cracks so far. Although WSDOT reassures that the level of vibration is low and there is neither risk nor need for worry, the residents turned to an independent engineering firm for further investigation on the structure and foundation in order to assess any possible damage. WSDOT has installed seven vibration monitors and the engineering firm twenty more, to thoroughly gauge the vibrations. Contributing factors are also the age of the building that dates back to 1967, and the soft-soil by the lake, on which the building is founded, says the agency. The drilling operations are expected to be finished by April.
