Setenil de las Bodegas is a Spanish town, located 157 km northeast of the province of Cádiz and is widely known for its buildings that are built into and under rock. The town sprawls across a narrow river gorge and looks like it might have been hit by a meteor.
The unusual architecture of the city is a result of the erosion of the gorge, caused by the river Trejo. Some houses are built into the rock walls of the gorge itself, utilizing the natural caves and overhangs and adding an external wall. The rock is used as a roof for the buildings and provides shade for the roads. For centuries the geomorphology of the area has provided protection against enemies as well as bad weather. The town has a population of almost 3,000 inhabitants and attracts many visitors.
