Professor Nilmar Janbu, a leading figure of the geo-profession and a student of Terzaghi and Casagrande in Harvard passed away in Trondheim, Norway, as reported by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, an organization he participated in the 1950s. Prof. Janbu made numerous contributions to the Profession, but the one that he is probably most known for is the stability analysis of slopes using dimensionless parameters, which is essentially his doctoral thesis at Harvard in 1954.

The NGI released an announcement about Prof. Janbu that is available here.

Geoengineer.org, in an effort to preserve this part of history, reproduced this announcement in the “In Memoriam” section of its website, available here.
