James W. “Jay” Martin, P.E. is the new president of ASFE/The Geoprofessional Business Association, a not-for-profit association of geoprofessional firms that employ some 125,000 individuals worldwide.
Welcomed into office at ceremonies during ASFE’s annual meeting in New Orleans, LA, Mr. Martin is the 40th individual to serve as ASFE’s president and chair of the group’s board of directors. The two additional officers and five directors-at-large who comprise the balance of ASFE’s board are:
President-Elect David R. Gaboury, P.E. (Terracon, Olathe, KS);
Secretary/Treasurer David A. Schoenwolf, P.E. (Haley & Aldrich, Inc., McLean, VA);
Kurt R. Fraese, L.G. (GeoEngineers, Inc., Seattle, WA);
Mark K. Kramer, P.E. (Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc., Plymouth, MI);
Frank D. Leathers, P.E. (GEI Consultants, Inc., Woburn, MA);
Gordon M. Matheson, Ph.D., P.E., P.G. (Schnabel Engineering, Glen Allen, VA); and
Steven D. Thorne, P.E., D.GE (Melick-Tully and Associates, P.C., South Bound Brook, NJ).
Mr. Martin is a vice president and principal of AMEC’s Earth & Environmental Division (Nashville, TN), where he fills two national roles: He is part of AMEC’s Infrastructure Sector leading the rail services and levee groups, and he is one of the principals helping to guide the firm’s geotechnical practice. He is also the managing principal for AMEC’s largest commercial client and previously chaired AMEC’s Technical Council. A graduate of the University of Louisville, where he earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees, both in civil engineering, Mr. Martin has more than 30 years’ experience in multiple aspects of geotechnical, environmental, and civil engineering. He has filled leadership positions in a number of professional organizations and is a published author.
Established in 1969, ASFE exists to “maximize the geoprofessions’ importance and value to the marketplace.” According to Mr. Martin, this means “reaching out to public- and private-sector owners, design professionals, contractors, and others to inform them about the time- and money-saving benefits derived by relying on qualified geoprofessionals, and developing programs, services, and materials geoprofessional firms use to enhance their business and professional practices in order to become their clients’ trusted professional advisors.”
Geoprofessional firms provide geotechnical, geologic, environmental, construction materials engineering and testing, and related professional services. All ASFE-member firms’ technical activities are under the full-time control of an individual who is legally and/or ethically bound to hold paramount public health, safety, and welfare. ASFE’s associate membership comprises geoprofessional educators; geoprofessionals employed by government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and industry; and attorneys and other consultants to ASFE-member firms.
