How to prepare a remoulded soil sample for triaxial testing

A procedure that involves the preparation of remoulded soil samples for soil testing is presented by Wykeham Farrance/ CONTROLS Group.

Investigation of stress-strain relationships in soil is usually carried out with triaxial tests where undisturbed, remoulded or compacted specimens are subjected to different stress levels and drainage conditions to simulate as closely as possible the different situations that can occur in the subsoil on site and the possible effects of construction, excavations, embankments, landslides, etc.

How to prepare a remoulded soil sample for triaxial testing

Remoulded soil samples are prepared directly on the cell base adapter of a triaxial apparatus using a sample former. All triaxial cell circuits have to be saturated with water. Put the membrane on the cell base adapter and seal it with two o-rings. Place the sample former and fold the membrane down to it. Push down to the bottom of the former one wet porous disk and one wet paper disk. Fill the sample former with wet sand and tamp the different layers until desired density. Put a wet filter paper and a porous disk on top of the prepared sample and then place the top cup. Fold the membrane back over the top cap and seal it with two o-rings. Remove carefully the sample former. Clean thoroughly the base of the triaxial cell from the residual sand and install the chamber of the triaxial cell. After closing the triaxial cell, lay gently the piston load on the top cap and adjust the axial displacement transducer. The sample is ready for testing.
