On July 22nd, Chinese researchers announced that they had discovered an underwater sinkhole under the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands. Underwater sinkholes are also know as blue holes and this new one has proven to be the deepest ever discovered.
Starting in August 2015, researchers explored this limestone cave using a combination of sonar, underwater cameras, and submersible robots. They measured the hole at 300.89 meters (987 feet) in depth and 130 meters (426 feet) wide at its opening. This surpasses the previous record holder, Dean's Blue Hole near the Bahamas, which is 202 meters deep. Twenty marine species were discovered within the cave.
