An extended coastal protection project is about to begin in Portsmouth, UK, covering nearly 13km of the area's coastline. The project aims in reducing flood risk and erosion over a time span of 100 years, as predictions foresee a sea level rise of up to one meter within the above time frame.
Based in scientific predictions, sea level is expected to rise by up to one meter in the next 100 years, thus drastically increasing the flooding risk of the already low-lying areas of Southsea and North Portsea Island. The planned coastal protection project, undertaken by the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership, is very much needed along Southsea and North Portsea Island, taking ito account that its coastal protection infrastructure is soon expected to close its effective life cycle. It is also estimated to reduce - in the long run - the risk of flooding and coastal erosion concerning 8,700 residential properties, 880 non-residential properties and other critical infrastructure in the area.
For the North Portsea Island, the project is expected to be complete within the next decade and the Portsmouth City Council has been awarded almost £44 million for the work.
