A foundation is considered as shallow when its width is greater than its embedment depth (D_{f} ≤ B).

When the ground surface level is different between the two sides of the foundation (Fig.1), its embedment depth is defined based on the lower side.

A foundation has to satisfy two main requirements:

- A sufficient factor of safety F (usually 3) against shear failure (bearing capacity problem)
- The total and differential settlement cannot exceed the tolerance levels

__Allowable bearing capacity __is the maximum stress that can be applied to the foundation soil such that the requirements above are met.
