TITLE: Geoengineer.org Donors Fund: 2008-2009 Call for Proposals

Contact: Mima Malakou, E-mail: secretariat@geoengineer.org or Prof. Dimitrios Zekkos, E-mail: zekkos@geoengineer.org

DESCRIPTION:

The Geoengineer.org Donors Fund solicits proposals for geo-projects that can make a valuable contribution to the geoengineering profession. The "Geoengineer.org Donors Fund" is a new program introduced by Geoengineer.org Website.

The purpose of this activity is to encourage the involvement of geoengineers-donors in funding, guiding and selecting the development of projects that can make a direct impact to the Profession.

Proposal Submission Guidelines (DEADLINE: MAY 15 2009)

Proposers should submit electronically to secretariat@geoengineer.org, in Word format, all required documents as explained below, by 12 pm Eastern US Time, May 15th 2009. Late proposals will not be accepted.

  • Completed Proposal Form. (This includes information about the scope of the proposal, the work plan, the schedule and budget).

  • 2-page CV, which should include, educational background, positions held (academic or in the industry), and any other relevant material such as publications, activities, initiatives etc.

Proposed projects may include any of the following:

  • Development of online course(s);

  • Development of online resource(s) or database(s);

  • Development of educational/instructional or informative resource(s) (e.g. development of manuals, animations, videos, or powerpoint slides);

  • Development of a gallery;

  • Other resources that are useful to the geoengineering community;

Each individual may submit only one proposal. Proposals submitted by a group of individuals are allowed. The proposal has to explain what the responsibilities of each member of the group are.

The duration of the project for 2009 is 1 year starting September 1st, 2009.

Funding for each project will be weighted towards the second half of the duration of the project, i.e. the awardee will have to demonstrate that progress is being made, before any funds are released.

This is the first year this program is being implemented. The total amount donated and available in the Fund for 2008-2009 is $3,000. Submitted proposals may not exceed this amount.

Eligibility

Academicians, practicing engineers, and researchers from all countries are eligible to submit a proposal. Graduate students may also submit a proposal. However, the qualifications of the proposer (CV) is a major consideration in the selection process. A successful track record in completing projects on time and on budget is preferable.

Assessment of Proposals

Proposals will be pre-screened by a 3- person "Donor's Fund Review Board". The review board will evaluate proposals based on the following criteria:

  • Completeness and organization of the proposal;

  • Merit of the proposal: Is it valuable to the geoengineering community? Is there a need for it? Can the community use the deliverable through Geoengineer.org?

  • Qualifications of the proposer;

  • Relation of the proposed activity/deliverable to the scope of the funds;

  • The amount of funds requested;

The Board will review all proposals and will select the top 5 proposals. The top 5-10 proposals are forwarded to the donors who made a donation on or before March 1st 2009, through the donor’s restricted website. The Donors vote and approve the projects that are to be funded. Each donor has a number of votes that is directly proportional to the amount of her/his donation. This means that donors who made larger donations have greater influence in the final decision for funding. Donors may decide to distribute their votes to a number of projects, or simply vote for one.

The donors will have 1 month to review the submitted proposals and vote their preferred proposals. The votes of a donor who has not voted within the time allotted will be used at the discretion of the Donor’s Fund Review Board.

Final decisions will be announced by the end of August, 2009.
