Initially characterized as a super typhoon, Neoguri is devastating Japan with heavy rainfall, major landslides and at least three casualties in the central town of Nagiso. Luckily, the typhoon - reaching wind speeds of about 155mph - has weakened and was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves towards Tokyo and Osaka. Typhoons are frequent in Japan, however, it is still early in the season for such strong and devastating storms. Watch the video below, showing a mudslide as recorded on camera!
Neoguri reached the island of Kyushu, Japan, on Thursday, and has caused floods and major landslides in central Japan. About 50 people have been injured in central Japan, while authorities have ordered the evacuation of about 130,000 households and warned others to remain in their homes, as the storm is heading towards Honshu, where Tokyo and Osaka are located. Despite its downgrade to a tropical storm, wind speeds still reach 45mph, with gusts up to 60mph. According to The Weather Channel: "Rainfall has added up quickly in some locals as bands of torrential rainfall spiral northward into the country east of the advancing tropical storm. Rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour were reported in the heaviest bands".
In the video below, heavy rainfall leads to a major landslide in the town of Nagiso, at Nagano prefecture, displacing trees and burying the downstream area under mud and debris. The recording camera is eventually covered in mud, however the speed at which the mud flows and the noise that is caused are indicative of the level of destruction. Footage taken after the mudflow shows buildings buried under the mud, bridges and train tracks destroyed. Reportedly, a 12-year-old boy was killed and three more members of his family were injured in this landslide.
