The landslide occurred due to heavy rain on Saturday, April 29, in the southwestern part of the country, tearing through Ayu village and burying 24 people under the debris.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the slide hit the village of Ayu in the Uzgen District of Osh region at around 6:40 am local time, destroying eleven houses; six of them with people still inside. A total number of 24 people were killed, including nine children. Over 250 rescue workers, including medics and soldiers, worked at the scene after the disaster, trying to excavate the buried village and find missing people.
Local authorities stated that people of the area had been warned about the risk of a possible landslide and had been prompted to evacuate their homes. The press office reported that those who decided to stay had signed papers stating they had been informed about the danger.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations said that the evacuation of 40 families living close to the disaster zone is now being organized, given the risk of further landslides.
According to Russia's state-run news agency RIA, at least 25 landslides have hit Osh region since the beginning of the year.
