Special Issue of the Geoengineer Newsletter

February 2007


The past year has been an exciting year for Geoengineer.org. The website experienced an unprecedented growth in content, activities, and visitors. As a result two employees were hired. With their assistance, and the continued support of the visitors and our corporate sponsors, Geoengineer.org has set new goals for 2007.

In this special issue of the newsletter, our progress during 2006 and our plans for 2007 are presented.

Geoengineer.org is a Center for Integrating Information in Geoengineering. Geoengineer.org is commited in supporting geo-professionals by classifying and promoting existing as well as developing new resources in Geoengineering.

We would like also to thank our Corporate Sponsors, our Support Organizations and our donors for their financial support that allows us to continue our efforts.

New staff join the Geoengineer.org Team!

The unprecedented growth of Geoengineer.org the last year, the increased operation needs, and the support of the visitors of the website, made necessary the continuous commitment of motivated individuals who with their skills and commitment, will support the further growth of the website.

We are pleased to announce that Mima Malakou and Manos Kapritsos have joined our team. Mima has a BA in Business Information Management and will be administering the services and content of the website. Manos has an MSc in Computer Science and is already developing advanced web applications.

With their help, we hope to build on the existing website and further improve its content and resources.

Web traffic breaks all records

The number of visitors and page views has grown significantly the last year. Here are some statistics:

>From April 1st to December 31st, 2006 (9 months):

  • the site was visited by 266,540 visitors;
  • there were 892,566 page views;
  • and 3,538,240 hits;
  • During April 2006 17,176 individuals visited the website while during December 2006, the number of visitors increased to 41,473.

The bimrocks website was developed!

This site was developed in collaboration with Dr. Medley and is an accessible source of information on bimrocks (block-in-matrix materials) for geological and geotechnical practitioners.

Increased content and resources

The content of the online databases available by Geoengineer.org has increased significantly with the continuous addition of new resources. Additional databases were created such as the PhD thesis database.

New peaks for the Geoengineer newsletter

The year 2006 was an important year for the Geoengineer Newsletter. Its subscribed members exceeded 4,000 individuals whereas the layout of the newsletter was significantly improved. In 2007 we expect the subscribed members of the Geoengineer newsletter to reach 5,000 individuals.

Announced the Geoengineer.org Press Center

In July 2006, the Geoengineer.org Press Center was established. The Press Center searches more than 20,000 press agencies publishing magazines, journals, websites and other publications and provides direct links to articles related to Geoengineering. Articles are updated every 12 hrs providing the visitors with the latest information as soon as it is released to the public. Also it promotes the press releases of GEO-Organizations and Companies affiliated with Geoengineer.org.

IJGCHlogoCirculation of the first issue of the International Journal of Geoengineering Case Histories

Last year this newly established refereed journal announced its first issue. Within the first 24 hours of the circulation of the first issue, the papers of the journal were downloaded more than 1000 times. Currently the second issue of the journal is under preparation.

The Case Histories journal is also now indexed by the Georef database.

PLANS FOR 2007

The Geoengineer.org intends to continue being the premier international information provider in Geoengineering. For 2007, Geoengineer.org intends:

  • To improve the existing databases by increasing the resources provided
  • To develop new databases of geoengineering information
  • To increase the frequency of circulation of the Geoengineer.org newsletter to once every month
  • To establish educational programs such as online courses
  • To establish fellowship programs for students in Civil Engineering
  • To grow our Corporate Sponsorship program and increase funding of our activities
  • In addition, we intend todevelop the Civil Engineer website which will be providing resources in all fields of civil engineering
