GEO RISK AND RELIABILITY
CALL FOR PAPERS:
International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster
Mitigation and Rehabilitation, 12-13 Dec 2005, Singapore
Chu Jian
(CJCHU@ntu.edu.sg) and Kok-Kwang Phoon
(cvepkk@nus.edu.sg)
Abstracts can be submitted online at: http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/civil/people/cvepkk/GEDMR05
After
the devastating disaster caused by the tsunami on 26 Dec 2004, disaster
mitigation and rehabilitation has become one of the most pressing topics
to be discussed among geotechnical engineers and related professions. To
share information relevant to geotechnical engineers on issues pertaining
to the mitigation of natural disasters (e.g., tsunamis, earthquakes,
landslides) and to pool our expertise together to provide technical
support on reconstruction and rehabilitation works, a joint working group
on geotechnical engineering for disaster mitigation and rehabilitation
(JWG-DMR) has been formed among the national geotechnical societies of
Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia
(comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) and Sri
Lanka.
An international conference related to the activities of
this JWG is currently being organised.
Technical papers related to
the conference theme are welcomed. Topics include natural disasters
(tsunami, earthquake, landslide, etc.), mitigation (early warning and
prediction systems for tsunami, earthquake and landslide, protection
works, etc.), risk analysis (hazard mapping, consequence evaluation,
etc.), rehabilitation and reconstruction (difficult soils, ground
treatment, design against earthquake and other natural disasters, etc.),
and others (soil dynamics, liquefaction, stability and movement,
environmental protection, case studies, etc.). It is recognized that
disaster mitigation and rehabilitation involve many disciplines besides
geotechnical engineering. Hence, multi-disciplinary contributions are
welcomed as well. The following plenary sessions are being scheduled:
· Regional report on the 2004 Tsunami or other major disasters and
rehabilitation works
· Society report on disaster mitigation and
rehabilitation experiences
