13,000 visitors per month and growing!
Thanks to the contributions of the visitors of the website, this is another newsletter full of information that we hope you will find useful. The completion of the new version of the website has resulted in an increase of the visitors of the website: The Geoengineer website currently has more than 13,000 visitors per month!
The great thing about having so many visitors is the feedback that we receive. Our visitors inform us of what the engineers are looking for, what tools are needed and could be valuable to our Profession. A good example is the recently established "Geoengineering Job forum" where employers can submit job openings at no cost. Since its establishment this forum is becoming more popular everyday.
Thank you again for your continued contributions and please keep the feedback coming. It will help us identify the needs of our Profession. I would also like to personally thank our sponsors, gINT software and deepexcavation.com. Their financial support helps continue the growth of the Geoengineer website.

GEO RISK AND RELIABILITY
The recent tsunami generated near Sumatra has propelled disaster mitigation to the forefront of public consciousness. A complete coverage is given at www.geohazards.no (also located under "Links" in this website). The death toll exceeding 150,000 emphasized the importance of research on natural hazards and how the attendant risks could be assessed and managed to the best interest of the public. This event also demonstrates that low probability events with return periods exceeding human lifespan may not receive the right amount of attention in the absence of a risk-based decision-making framework, even though the consequences could be high. The website has been renamed as "Georisk and Reliability" to better reflect the broad spectrum of geo-disciplines that are involved in risk and reliability research and practice. An electronic forum has been established, courtesy of geoengineer.org, to better facilitate the exchange of technical information. Please feel free to use this useful facility. A comprehensive list of proceedings is also made available for reference. Interested practitioners are invited to email KK Phoon at cvepkk@nus.edu.sg if they would like to be listed under "People" and if they have useful information to share with the rest of the georisk and reliability community.
