Professor Harry Poulos to present John Mitchell Lecture at the 10th international conference on piling and foundations
Professor Harry Poulos will present the prestigious John Mitchell Lecture at the Deep Foundations Institute’s and European Federation of Foundation Contractors’ international conference, being held between 31 May and 2 June 2006 at the NH Krasnapolsky Hotel in central Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Poulos, Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney and senior principal of Coffey Geosciences, is internationally renowned for his work on piled foundations. He was the 1989 Rankine Lecturer, the 2004 Terzaghi Lecturer and Australian Civil Engineer of the Year in 2003. He was also Australasian vice president of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from 1989 to 1994.
The John Mitchell Lecture is named in honour of John Michael Mitchell, one of the earliest organisers of DFI’s international conferences and a pioneering supporter of DFI’s role as a leader in the global industry. Mitchell was killed on 14 September 1990 while observing piling works at a site in central London.

The event for the international foundation industry in 2006
The tenth international conference on piling and foundations will be the event for the international foundation industry in 2006. The emphasis will be on practical, technical and business solutions for foundation work worldwide, with high quality technical presentations and keynote lectures on cutting edge technology and innovation.
Delegates and speakers will come from consultants and contractors working in the foundation sector to suppliers and also clients of foundation work – including main contractors and public and private clients. Those already registered are from Canada, France, UK, Japan, Hungary, USA, Italy and the Netherlands.
By bringing the supply chain together it is hoped delegates will meet useful contacts and have meaningful discussions on how to improve services, products and working practices of the international foundation industry. There will be ample opportunity for networking.
The first day will focus on foundation techniques – design, practice and new technology; deep excavations; and monitoring, testing and data processing.
And day three will focus on other issues affecting the foundation industry, including commercial drivers, managing geotechnical risk, the environmental impact of foundation works, health and safety and working conditions.
One of the major highlights of the event will be day two, which will be given over entirely to detailed explanations and discussions on Amsterdam’s North-South line.

- MORE-
The morning will cover the metro project “from A-Z”, with presentations by representatives from the client, consultants and contractors involved in the scheme. In the afternoon delegates will have a not-to-be-missed chance to visit to key sites on the route, including excavations beneath Amsterdam’s Central Station.

Exhibition a resounding success
Over 30 exhibitors have already signed up for the exhibition running alongside the conference, representing the entire supply chain of the international foundations industry. The show will be held in rooms surrounding the Krasnapolsky’s spectacular Winter Garden, which will form the heart of the conference – the cocktail reception and banquet will both be held here, as will all lunches and coffee breaks, presenting further opportunities for networking and business.
The conference hotel’s location, in the centre of Amsterdam, means delegates and exhibitors will be able to soak up the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most historic and exciting cities – the areas around the hotel are packed with bars and restaurants and many of the sights are within easy walking distance.
The event is sponsored by exclusive lead sponsor Van Elle, with main sponsors Casagrande, Liebherr, Pennine, Soilmec, Soletanche Bachy, Stent and Trevi.

The European Federation of Foundation Contractors represents about 450 foundation contractors across Europe. It promotes common interests of its members, aiming to improve standards of workmanship and maintaining high standards of technical competence, safety and innovation. EFFC working groups have produced a wide range of advice documents. These include dispute resolution, joint venture contracts and the EFFC members’ code of conduct.
