Hurricane Gustav struck the New Orleans area on September 1, 2008 with the first significant storm surge loading of the area levees since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. On Oct 2 and 3, 2008, a group of civil engineers, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), through the Geoengineering Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association, visited the New Orleans, LA area to assess levee performance.
